Audi may be planning a new variant of the R8 sports car, inspired by the Nürburgring. The German automotive company recently filed a trademark for “R8 Green Hell” in the European Union. The Nürburgring is famously nicknamed “Green Hell”, as an expression of the dangerous and intimidating character of the track through the woods of the Eifel mountains.
The trademark filing isn’t proof of a new model in the making; car manufacturers often file trademark applications for attractive names, without having an actual model in the works. It’s predominantly a way to secure names for future use.
It would be interesting to learn how the owners of the Nürburgring feel about the use of the nickname by Audi.
