The famous Coca-Cola bottle is celebrating its hundred-year anniversary this year. The iconic bottle has hardly changed since day one.
The soft drink manufacturer is celebrating the centenary of the bottle with the exhibition “100 Years in a Bottle” at its headquarters in Atlanta. The Coca-Cola bottle became one of the most famous design icons in the history of the modern consumer.
The bottle was first created in 1915. A local bottling company in Terre Haute, Indiana (USA) called The Root Glass Company, was commissioned to design a bottle that had to be “so distinctive that it was even recognisable shattered on the floor, or if only felt with closed eyes”.
The iconic bottle would conquer the world as a symbol of “freedom and happiness”, after two world wars and a global economic downturn. In 1950, the Coca-Cola bottle was the first commercial product on the cover of TIME magazine. Then it grew into the world of design and cult object.
