In Holland, we are preparing ourselves for the new King who will be wearing the crown as of April 30. In the US, a crown is also the subject of attention: a lawsuit has been filed by Diageo, the producer of the whiskey Crown Royal against competitor Mexcor.
Diageo already filed earlier this year a lawsuit against Mexcor on the base of negative comments (Mexcor called Crown Royal a “poison”). In the second trial the similarity between the products and packages is at stake. Of course it is not a pretty sight to see the product of your sworn enemy next to your product. What bothers Diageo is also the emphasis on Crown whereas Club is written in a marginal typeface (Crown Club is already registered as a trademark by Mexcor and was not objected by Diageo).
It is hard to see whether Diageo is overprotective regarding its crown jewel, or Mexcor is indeed trying to take advantage of the reputation of Crown Roayl. Time will tell!
