Dolce & Banana

Mijou Beller is a 60 year young woman from South Africa that owns a bijou and jewelry shop called Dolce & Banana.

Yes, really.

Six years ago the Italian fashion company Dolce & Gabbana approached Beller and requested  she change the name of her business.

“They were not happy with the name of my business,” Beller said. Her lawyer makes the story even better: “Then I got my own lawyer to tell them that they don’t have a trademark on jewellery. There are no Dolce & Gabbana stores in South Africa.”

Apparently the fact that D&G is a famous trademark and has a broader scope of protection, did not cross the attorney’s mind.

D&G requested Beller to pay their legal costs, but she said she could not afford it, since she had already changed the store’s name to “…. & Banana”.

The reason for the initial name: “I wanted a glamorous name with an African feel to it”.

Yeah right…
