People are standing in line for hours to visit a “Dumb Starbucks” coffee shop in California.
A very familiar-looking coffee shop has opened up in Los Feliz, California. Not a regular Starbucks, but a “Dumb Starbucks.”
Everything at this bizarro coffee shop is similar to the real Starbucks, with menu items like a “Dumb Iced Caramel Macchiato” and a “Dumb Green Tea Frappuccino.” The major difference: all drinks are free.
The creators are calling the shop “parody art” in their FAQ to protect themselves from the notoriously litigious coffee chain: “Although we are a fully functioning coffee shop, for legal reasons Dumb Starbucks needs to be categorize as a work of parody art. So, in the eyes of the law, our “coffee shop” is actually an art gallery and the “coffee” you’re buying is considered the art. But that’s for our lawyers to worry about. All you need to do is enjoy our delicious coffee!”
Although this parody exception may fly in the US, in Europe this may be different. Copyright law has a parody exception, but trademark law has not! So, Starbucks may have a case when this would have taken place in Europe. Unless, the ‘freedom of speech’ argument is thrown on the table.
Anyway, quite funny though. Check out the gallery below.
