The ‘copyright’ of US dollar bills lies with the US Treasury. Printing, publishing or importation, or the making or importation of the necessary plates or items for printing or publication, of color illustrations of U.S. currency is forbidden.
However, reproduction of US currency in color or black and white is permitted as long as the reproductions are less than three-fourths or more than one and one-half the size of the original and one-sided. Size restrictions apply whether using the whole or a portion of any bill. Additionally, care must be taken to dispose of negatives, scans, or other materials used in creating the reproductions.
So, how about James Charles’ work?
He draws with ink on existing dollar bills, making cool, new valuable art. A five dollar bill, becomes a $600,- work of art. Did we mention it will be framed?
You can choose from a wide variety of characters: Jimi Hendrix, the scary girl from The Exorcist, and – our personal favorite – Bob Ross (Let’s paint “a happy little tree”) .
Very cool stuff!
