Just a number?

A fine example of the benefits of trademarks.

A local chocolatier Roussel Durand in France has introduced new kind of chocolates: chocolates injected with fine herbs and spices. 32 different kind of flavors distinguishable with the numbers on the top of the chocolates. The name of these products is Les Numéros.

A competitor saw the success of these products and launched the same, also under the name Les Numéros. What the competitor did not know is that Roussel Durand had registered his trademarks. A court in Paris now agrees that there is trademark infringement and ordered a cease of use, a rectification and condemned the competitor in the costs of EUR 7.000,00. Calling a trademark just a number is one kind of an understatement!
