Sounds can be trademarks, Nintendo must have thought while registering one of the most iconic sounds of the 80s and 90s: the Super Mario Bros. “coin chime”. If you have ever played a Mario Bros. game, you undoubtedly know the “coin chime”, the sound you hear when you collect a coin inside the game. It’s one of the most iconic sound effects in a video game. Ever. Sounds can be trademarks. Think about the “Nokia” tune or the “Intel inside” tune. Remarkably, Nintendo has never sought to trademark the “coin chime” sound. More than 30 years after the original Super Mario Bros. release, the company is making moves to do just that. Nintendo filed for the trademark back in February. You can make trademarks out of your money. Or was it the other way around?
