There’s beer and there’s beer. But then there’s NATTY.
Natty Greene’s Brewing Company from Greenboro (USA), has been growing and expanding, which urged its owners Kayne Fisher and Chris Lester to to protect their brand as a trademark.
But now competitor, the enormous brewery of Anheuser-Busch is opposing that trademark. Anheuser-Busch claims their”Natural Light” brand is often nicknamed “Natty Light”, which sounds too similar to Natty Greene’s brand. This name has been trademarked.
Lester claimed to take the opposition seriously, but find it hard to believe that their can be any confusion. Consumers have backed up this claim: “They probably have too many trademark lawyers looking around finding something to do and they came up with Natty and Natty and Natty, Natty. I mean it’s absurd, in my mind,” said Paul Ledman, visiting Greensboro from Maine. His friend David Wilcox agreed. “I don’t see any confusion between the nickname for Natural Light and Natty Greene’s. I don’t see how they could mistake that whatsoever.”
Nevertheless, MarkMatters.com believes it may be a hard fight for the Greeboro brewery: NATTY versus NATTY LIGHT, both for ‘beers’; there is a big chance Anheuser-Busch will win this one.
