The automaker has been selling sedans under the Indigo brand since 2002, while Interglobe (IndiGo’s parent company) lifted off in 2006. Meanwhile, IndiGo – a great name for an Indian airline by the way – is India’s biggest and most profitable airline carrier.
Both parties registered the trademark, but Tata was first.
The timing couldn’t have been worse for IndiGo, as it are almost ready to launch its initial public offering (IPO). Trouble about their brand name is the last thing they can use, and may adversely impact their business.
The big question of course: are automobiles similar to planes? The Indian court will decide.
