Que sera Zara

Clothing chain Zara is being accused of stealing designs. LA illustrator, Tuesday Bassen, claims the fashion retailer has used several of her designs without permission.
When Bassen discovered that Zara’s design showed a remarkable resemblance with her own, older, designs, she sent an angry letter. But instead of an apology Zara replied Bassed “did not have a leg to stand on”, because “she is an independent artist and they are a huge company.” Yes, that was really the reply.
The independent designer has worked for many well-known brands such as Urban Outfitters, Adidas and Nike, but was never approached by the Spanish chain. On Instagram Bassen shared her displeasure as well as Zara’s answer. Social media to the rescue.
Since Bassen reported this, many more designers are claiming to have become a victim of Zara’s theft. Fellow illustrator Adam Kurtz even made a collage of stolen designs. “It is time to hold ZARA responsible.”
UPDATE (26 july 2016): The power of social media. British Vogue reports that meanwhile Zara has taken most of the “infringing” collection out of its stores.
