As it happens, it is the Olympic flag’s birthday this year! In 1914 the flag was introduced by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). But the First World War caused the flag to be put into operation in 1920, officially, for the Summer Games in Antwerp.
Even today the so called ‘Antwerp Ceremony’ is still taking place: during this ritual the host city hands the flag back to the President of the IOC. He then hands over the flag to the representative of the country that hosts the next Olympics.
The logo with the five rings was designed by Frenchman Pierre de Coubertin, founder of the IOC. Each of the colors can be seen in the national flags of the countries which, at that time, participated in the Olympics.
The Olympics are also a time for ambush marketing and ads referring to the Games; send us your favourite ones!
