Sports and humor are always close connected, in our opinion. But not with the Major League Baseball team The Atlanta Braves.
Braves fans Everett and Allison Steele wanted to embrace an inside joke amongst the fan base. The Steeles noticed that on Twitter, “Atlanta Braves” is often misspelled: “Atlanta Barves”. Running along with this, they made parody t-shirts. Funny, huh?
Well. the Braves organization was not amused.
The Steeles received a strict letter stating that there ‘funny’ action constitutes “trademark infringement, unfair competition, false designation of origin, and/or trademark dilution, in violation of federal, state and/or common law.”
A joke went wrong. A disappointment for the Steeles, as they meant no harm. As a token of good will, they have donated $850 to the franchise’s charity, the Braves Foundation. And there are still fans. Real fans. Despite all.
