In Sydney, Australia, the definition of “Superman” was the centre of a law suit, where DC Comics is appealing a decision by the registrar of trademarks to allow a fitness company to register the trademark “Superman Workout”.
The registrar noted that the definition of “Superman” did not originate from DC Comics. Nietzsche described it as “an ideal superior being” in the 19th century.
DC Comics, however, claimed that they have “utilised, adapted and popularised” the term “Superman” to such an extent that the comic book hero was the first connotation that would come to Australians’ minds.
It is now up tot the Sydney Federal Court to rule on this.
