Coca-Cola sells a soft drink called Tumult, and has registered the name. Now the soft drink giant claims the Belgian beer’s name is confusingly similar. The name Tumulus was chosen as a reference to the tumuli or cairns in the Belgian region. Coca-Cola’s Tumult is a beverage with a beer or fruit taste.
Apparently negotiations between Coca-Cola and De Kale Ridders, the brewery behind Tumulus 800, had been going on for several years. In the end the Belgian brewery lost, but wasn’t left empty-handed.
Although the case cost the brewery almost €20.000,-, they managed to find a compromise: they can keep other beer names that are made out of a combination with Tumulus, and only have to change the one that is completed by the figure 800.
“We can’t use numbers any longer, but we can keep other beer names. There are also some specific colours we are not allowed to use”, a spokesman for the brewery states.
