Since its bankruptcy Saab is in Chinese hands. But still things aren’t running smoothly. Owner NEVS (National Electric Vehicle Sweden) has been given extra time from their parent company Saab AB to find a new investor, and start producing cars again. If they fail to do so, they lose the right to use the SAAB trademark, which is of course desastrous.
It is not unlikely for a company to use a trademark as leverage. It often happens with franchise companies: if they cannot meet the quality standard or fail to make enough money, the licence to use the trademark is revoked, and the licensee is left empty handed.
Let’s hope NEVS can get their act together, because it will be a shame to have an iconic brand like Saab fade away.
