June 29, 2001 was World Industrial Design Day. A Day to stop and celebrate the importance of industrial design.
As you may know, the appearance of a product can be protected: via copyright and via a (industrial) design registration, and sometimes even through a trademark registration.
In the European Union you have the possibility of a EU-design registration: with one registration you acquire design protection in 27 countries for a relatively small amount of money. The registration is valid for 5 years, and can be extended for a total of 25 years. Although your design may already be protected by copyright law, a design registration gives you an actual certificate. This will always come in handy when it’s time to furnish proof that your are indeed the designer.
If you designed a product or the packaging of a product, it is worthwhile to have a IP attorney take a look at it and advise you how you can protect your design. After all, you have put in a lot of effort, you wouldn’t want anyone to steal your design, would you?
