hype-wypeSometimes big companies fight small companies over trademark rights, and are portrayed as trademark bullies. So what happens if a large company sues a 12-year old?

It happened to Sophia Forino, a bright young girl who invented a new product that was designed to easily clean your cell phone screen; a microfiber cloth with some double sided tape on it. After several prototypes, it led to a final product called HypeWipes. The result, a trademark suit by Current Technologies, owner of the trademark Hype-Wype.

Current Technologies demands that Sophia ceases and desist the use of the name, because the are using the very similar name for a sealed bleach towelette, sold to hospitals and other companies as a disinfectant cleaner.

Instead of lawyering up, Sophia’s family is doing a (financially) smart thing: they are asking the public’s support via social media. If you want Current Technologies to drop the lawsuit, you can sign an online petition. Up to now over 82,000 people have supported Sophia.

Although Current Technologies, legally, might be right, this wouldn’t be the first time social media trumped a law suit. Current Technologies should be careful not the get caught in a negative public opinion, because they are planning to sue a child entrepreneur.
